My Suite is in three short movements. The Prelude begins with a low, groaning glissando, as if the cello is trying to coax the music into existence. The tempo picks up into a constant stream of flowing notes, with gestures reminiscent of baroque figures, but sliding and warping and never really coming into focus for long. The Saraband, grounded by its stately dance rhythms, is the emotional core of the suite. The final movement, Gigue, is an intense fugue; music from the prelude returns several times before the two movements are combined, bringing the piece to a restless conclusion.
